Paul Epstein
Senior IBM Enterprise Systems Engineer
With twenty four years experience in the information
technology field, Paul Epstein, has advanced expertise in VM and VSE operating
systems running on various IBM mainframes (7060, 2003, 4300, ES/9000,
Multiprise). His specialized services include installation, migration,
and tuning of all major
components and subsystems - CICS, POWER, VSAM, ICCF, VTAM, CMS,
DIRMAINT, RSCS and vast experience with Local and Wide Area Networking (37XX,
NCP, SSP, Token Ring, 3174, TCP/IP).
After sixteen (16) years with IBM’s mainframe division, Mr.
Epstein’s vast knowledge and experience of data center hardware technologies
and operating systems has allowed him to develop an international following of
clients that contact him routinely before attempting any and all changes,
additions or modifications to their enterprise systems.
As a respected leader within the IT community, Mr. Epstein offers
his knowledge and experience by making presentations at system engineering
symposiums. During his employ with IBM he received the IBM Performer of The
Half Award for technical excellence in marketing, design, development,
migration and maintenance of enterprise systems. Mr. Epstein learned his trade
from IBM where he started as a program support representative, transitioned to a
service program representative, and became a senior enterprise systems
engineer.
Experience and Accomplishments:
-
Project managed the relocation of IBM Mainframe:
Mr. Epstein managed the relocationof an IBM 9121 Model 521 (ES/9000) from NY to
Montreal, Canada for BNP/Paribas (an international French bank). During the course
of the project, he designed and implemented the network architecture conversion
from IBM Token Ring to TCP/IP and replaced the Microsoft SNA and print servers with
a complete TCP/IP solution. Additionally, the TN3270 and FTP replaced user access
and file transfer connectivity to the IBM Mainframe eliminating the need for SNA
traffic on the network.
-
Reduced hardware and software expenditures:
Mr. Epstein consolidated multiple data centers into a single location and image at the
corporate headquarters of Coldata (a large collection agency). Project tasks included
replacing multiple 9221 processors, a 9345 DASD, and 3422 Tape with a 7060 processor,
ICEBERG DASD, and 3490E tape technology. This enabled the customer to centrally control
their critical business applications, improve performance significantly and reduce
backup/restore times. Additionally, the antiquated ICA remote connections were
replaced with bus-tech MAN technology enabling enterprise wide TCP/IP (TN/3270)
access to the mainframe.
-
Project managed the design and implementation of multiple communication
networks:
For IBM clients looking to facilitate connectivity within the enterprise, Mr. Epstein
currently provides consulting services internationally on IBM’s (VTAM, NCP, 37XX, 3174,
TCP/IP), and OEM (BusTech/CSI) communications products. Additionally, he implements TCP/IP
(TN3270) solutions necessary to meet the demands of the growing business on the
existing SNA networks currently incapable of adding workstations or
communicating with various IP based platforms. One of Mr. Epstein’s specialties
is providing advanced security and connectivity with no disruption of service
to end users.
-
Project managed system migrations for IBM clientele:
Mr. Epstein has managed multiple VSE/SP, VSE/ESA, VM, and VM/ESA system
migrations for IBM clientele around the world. Additionally, IBM calls on Mr.
Epstein’s expertise and experience in recommending parameters for performance,
security, and integrity, migrating various subsystems (CICS, VTAM, and RSCS)
from older releases to current releases and training system programming and
operations staff in new/changed functions of systems (with minimal disruption
of service to end users).
Mr. Epstein received a BA degree from the State University College of
New York and has successfully completed multiple IBM technical training degrees in VM, VSE,
VTAM, NCP and ES/9000 hardware. Currently, he attends technical seminars around the world
where he offers his expertise, experiences and advice on enterprise systems.
